Rags
In the world of film, photography, and commercial production, rags are an indispensable part of the grip and electric (G&E) toolkit. These large fabric panels—made from materials such as silk, grid cloth, muslin, or solid black fabric—are used to control, soften, diffuse, or block light on set.
Rags are typically mounted on metal frames and come in standard sizes like 6’x6′, 8’x8′, 12’x12′, and 20’x20′, allowing crews to scale lighting control for any production size. They are categorized by their function:
Silks and Grid Cloths — diffuse light for softer shadows and balanced illumination.
Solids (or Blacks) — block unwanted light or create negative fill for contrast.
Nets (Single or Double) — subtly reduce light intensity without altering quality.
Muslins and Bounces — reflect or warm up light naturally for a softer aesthetic.
Professionally maintained rags are key to shaping light with precision—transforming harsh sunlight or powerful studio lamps into beautifully controlled, cinematic lighting. Whether used indoors or on location, rags provide versatility, consistency, and creative flexibility, making them essential for any grip or lighting setup.
